You're not the only one with obnoxious opinions. I think the only reason Chandler and Hammett can be compared is because Bogie played both Spade and Marlowe. Otherwise, they had very different approaches to the detective story. Chandler was all about mood, and did that wonderfully. Hammett was a superior craftsman. THE MALTESE FALCON and the inexplicably maligned THE THIN MAN are impeccably plotted mysteries. Not bad for an old alky. I was taken to task for comparing Jim Thompson with James M. Cain, but I have seen a similarity in some of their work. I have nothing against humor. I wrote a fairly broad send up of Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer called DEADER THAN EVER. It was a two hour pilot for a new version of the series for CBS a few years back. It aired under the title COME DIE WITH ME. A great movie it ain't, but it was a heck of a lot of fun and I blame everything that's wrong with it on the meddling TV executives. As for more of MY obnoxious opinions... Dave Goodis and Paul Cain were hacks! Woolrich is almost unreadable, but REAR WINDOW sure was a great flick! And is Charles Willeford guilty of plagerism? The plot of his 1956 novel UNTIL I AM DEAD, also known as WILD WIVES is virtually identical to an earlier RKO movie called WHERE DANGER LIVES. If I'm wrong, I'm sure there's someone out there who'll be glad to let me know... - # RARA-AVIS: To unsubscribe, say "unsubscribe rara-avis" # to majordomo@icomm.ca
