The North American Branch of the International Association of
Crime Writers is pleased to announce nominees for their annual
HAMMETT PRIZE for a work of literary excellence in the field
of crime writing by a US or Canadian author. The nominees are
          as follows:

Michael Connelly, The Poet (Little, Brown)
James W. Hall, Buzz Cut (Delacorte)
                    Peter Robinson, Innocent Graves (Viking)
Martin Cruz Smith, Rose (Random House)

A reading committee of IACW/NA members selected the
nominees, based on recommendations from other members and
the publishing community. The committee was headed by Lise
McClendon and included Maureen Daly, Eleanor Hyde, John
North, Ann Romeo, and Michael Stone.

The winner will be chosen by three distinguished outside judges:
popular and prolific science fiction author and scholar C. J.
Cherryh; Andre Schiffrin, Director of The New Press; and John
Hollander, critic and poet, who is Sterling Professor of English at
          Yale University.

The organization expects to name the HAMMETT PRIZE winner
within the next few weeks. He will receive a bronze "Thin Man"
trophy, designed by sculptor Peter Boiger.
