Half right; there is a female singer named Nan in this one, but it's
about Boyd Cohoon, the youngest son of a local mountain-man turned
rancher, who returns to town five years after serving time for armed
robbery. He didn't commit the crime, his girlfriend's brother did, and
Boyd went to jail out of love for the sister. When he returns to town,
he discovers that is sacrifice really means little to his former
girlfriend, and even less to the brother for whom he sacrificed.
Further, it turns out that his father and older brother have been
murdered while he was away; Boyd's bothered by this, but he isn't the
revenging type, he just wants to settle on his father's ranch and get on
with his life. Various members of the local community won't let him,
though, including the marshall who is obsessed with finding reasons to
jail him or run him out of town.

This *is* a really good one, and I'm going to look for more Donald
Hamilton westerns.
