RARA-AVIS: Slang question: Harpies

This is a call for help originating from the Disney Comics mailing list.
Who's have thought a crossover between hard-boiled and Disney was ever
possible ?

In the '50s, Carl Barks wrote a Disney Comic called The Golden Fleece, where
Scrooge & family went to Greece and met all sorts of mythological creatures.
Among them were harpies, but a Disney editor renamed them "larkies" because
harpies was a slang word for prostitute.

Nobody on the Disney Comics mailing list recalls having heard the name harpy
used in such a sense. What about you ? Kathy ?
