Two quotes that go well together. First, from Paul Valéry (p. 144):

I fear the known more than the unknown.

Second, from John Cage (Kostelanetz, p. 211), which I often see quoted without a citation:

I can’t understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I’m frightened of the old ones.
