He was indeed a nice guy. Took me to my first P-Funk (with Sly Stone for a few short minutes) concert, back in the early '80s.
He was also into our type of literature, tried to bring Walter Mosley's Easy Rawlins to TV, along with a PI series starring Jimmy Smits. Unfortunately, neither got very far.
