Consider this a friendly set-your-DVR alert: Tonight [March 16], TCM will be running three classic Akira Kurosawa films back-to-back.
This month, Kurosawa, who passed away in 1998, would have turned 100 years old. Turner Classic Movies pays homage to the man widely regarded as one of the most influential directors in cinema history by playing some of his greatest films on Tuesday evenings. And you won’t want to miss tonight’s lineup: 1960’s The Bad Sleep Well, about a young executive caught up in the world of corporate greed and corruption; a kidnapping drama, 1963’sHigh and Low, loosely based on Ed McBain’s King’s Ransom; and 1965’s Red Beard, about a doctor and his rebellious apprentice, which has been called “a testament to the goodness of humankind.” (Bonus trivia: Red Beard was apparently the last of Kurosawa’s films shot in black and white.) For Kurosawa devotees or, really, anyone who loves good movies, tonight will be a treat.
