I started with American Tabloid, which worked great for me.
I also have a soft spot for Suicide Hill, which is the last of Ellroy's Lloyd Hopkins books but so superior to the previous two that they barely seem connected. It is very different from the kinds of books Ellroy has been writing since The Black Dahlia, but a real kick to read.
