With Ellroy, start at the beginning: BROWN'S REQUIEM, KILLER ON THE ROAD, BECAUSE THE NIGHT, CLANDESTINE. You really can't go wrong with Ellroy, but the later books are complex and interwoven. The early books are very dark and hard to put down.

For whatever reason, I've somehow been reading crime books for 35 years and have never read anything by James Ellroy or Andrew Vachss. Can anyone recommend to me where to start w/ either or both?

    thanks,
