      Last week I picked up his Vespers, after many years of not reading him. Appropriately, this was after having reread Westlake's _Levine_ collection of novellas. I had forgotten how good McBain was at setting, characterization and dialogue, so much so that the mystery itself is not necessarily the main thing that stays with me.

      We never did have an Ed McBain/Evan Hunter month, did we? Perhaps we should.
