    I don't think his actual age is the issue. It's how old he LOOKS. Nicholson looked like he was in his mid-30's when he first played Jake Gittes. DiCaprio still looks like he's in his early 20's.

    For most people, that would be a good thing. But for an actor trying to bring a certain level of gravitas and street cred to a role, it's not a great qualification.

    While DiCaprio can certainly handle hard-boiled parts, as his performance in THE DEPARTED clearly shows, let's remember that, in THE DEPARTED, he was playing a rookie cop who was in his early 20's. The quality that made him able to bring that off while actually being ten years older is the same quality that makes it difficult for him to be a convincing Travis McGee.
