But James M. Cain? That train left the station while Cain was still

alive. Some of his latter stuff was pretty weak.

Which specifically? I read his last, THE ENCHANTED ISLE, last week, and loved it. It captures very well the lifestyle of hippies living on the edge of society in the late 60s, and their indecision about chic poverty and doing whatever it takes to become very rich. Its a good, compelling story like most of Cain's. I read it in one sitting. Supposedly he was pretty much a recluse at the time he wrote the story. I wonder how he knew so much about the crime scene of the 60s.

I keep hearing about these awful Cain stories. I've yet to read one.
