    Forgot to mention economy of language. There is an old, perhaps apocryphal, story about one of Raymond Chandler's editors handing a blue pencil and a page of Chandler to young writers and saying "Cut it. Just cut anywhere." The point being that every word needed to be there. Chandler may have forgotten who done it from time to time, but the actual writing is just tight as a tick.
