That's the way Howard Hawks himself told it to Joseph McBride
when he interviewed Hawks. I think Hawks says they were alone
in a boat fishing, so there's no telling whether the story is
true or apocryphal.
McBride's book of Hawks interviews is a very interesting and
entertaining read. Hawks comes out a quite hardboiled
character.
