for a little dude, Cagney was built. John Wayne was a pretty macho specimen himself, although he's most famous of course for his westerns and war movies.
  BIG JIM MC CLAIN is the only picture I can think of from that general period where he played something resembling a detective. THE SEARCHERS however has one incredibly noirish moment near the end
