I opened one of the dozens of boxes in the basement just to
see what I own, and I happened upon John D. MacDonald's _The
Good Old Stuff_, a collection of his best crime stories from
Manhunt and other old magazines. I had read this book years
ago and found it interesting, but on second reading it seems
much better. The skill to develop practically any theme and
give life to any character is remarkable. In his
introduction, he says he wrote I don't know how many million
words in four years. He was a writing machine from early
on.
The stories are touched up and sometimes "updated", as
confessed by John D. If you run into a copy, I suggest
grabbing it. It's good stuff.
Best,
