Sorry to respond so late but my internet access has been spotty. The book always struck me as a sort of suicide note. Something's time has passed and I always thought Chandler cognizant of that in the writing of The Long Goodbye. Which is why I like the movie so much. It finds another way to bring that feeling into the narrative without beating the viewer over the head with it.
