I finally finished reading this P.I. Paul Pine/Howard Browne
title (many thanks to a book swap with Joyce). The plot is
pretty basic and I read somewhere Mr. Browne wrote it in five
weeks. But I enjoyed the vintage hardboiled tone, gritty
Chicago setting, and clever Chanlderesque metaphors. "Poor
old Pine" at one point reads a William P. McGivern crime
novel and he goes to the movies. Pine is a likeable P.I. This
paperback is a Penzler reprint.
