There's a name that I haven't heard in years. As a teenager,
I grew up in New York theatre and Babel's Marya was the first
-- in a very short acting career
-- play that I was in. So I looked into his other work and
found some great reading. There was a true story of a friend
who suggested that one of Babel's short stories would make a
good novel. When the friend cane back weeks later, there was
a stack of manuscript pages on the table. The friend asked if
Babel had turned the story into a novel. Babel said no. But
he had explored the story and wrote 22 variations of
it.
Haven't read him in decades. Another talent lost to a gulag .
