Welcome, BrotherT. The Dick Contino novella is one of the best things that Ellroy ever wrote, in my opinion. I assume Starr's Cold Caller gave plenty of satisfaction, right?

And I'll put this on the table: I think Ellroy, should he apply himself to nonfiction (true crime, especially, or at least weird stories), would be an outstanding practitioner. I am reconsidering my opinion of My Dark Places, which on a slow second reading seems much, much better.
