I too have been re-reading Rankin, with increasing respect. I
wish I could write that well.
Though if you want noir-noir, I have just finished the
historian Eric Hobsbawm's new book, Globalisation, Capitalism
and Terrorism. Now
_there's_ dark and terrifying and screwed. Yes, well, I know,
