**************** Yup. All the way back to Gilgamesh, the very first literary work. More recently in Gothic and even more recently in American Naturalism. The only way to separate noir fiction from the rest of this is through the artifice of a time stamp. Without the contrived time requirement, there's no way to eliminate Crane's Maggie from the noir fiction tag.
