This particular definitional or foundational controversy has
a history here... to the point where its mention has acquired
a farcical tone. There has been a lot of horseplay around the
noir thing. Hardboiled is done, but noir always slips away.
The definition, whatever it might be, is encrusted with the
droppings of many a bird, self included.
