Well, you don't have to be Socrates to know that there is
significant value in defining terms in any discussion. Among
other things it helps to make clear exactly what is being
discussed so that one is not talking at cross purposes. It
can also help people involved in such a discussion to
recognize their ignorance about a particular subject. Finally
the dialectical process can actually lead to increased
knowledge among all those involved in the discussion.
Admitedly attempts at definition that are too prolonged or
too extensive can also be unproductive but I'd rather be
clear about what's being discussed or not. If words aren't
convenient, agreed-upon symbols for describing specifics you
can't really discuss anything intelligently, can you?
