I strongly suggest (though it's your money) that you give
Himes's Harlem novels the full treatment. They make up a
great body of work.
*************** I'm going to take your advice and start
racking them up. I read Cotton Comes to Harlem a few years
back and liked it, and my interest was further piqued by
Haut's description of them in his book. The trade paperbacks
that came out several years back are really nice (Black
Lizard turned into Vintage?) I'm hoping I can find
them.
I've got a critical book on his work, but I don't want to
read it before I get a chance to read a few of them. I'm not
home so I can't say what it is.
