Now that you mention it, you may be right, but I sometimes
get the feeling that writers don't plan those things, they
just happen in context ... although the assignment of Ely as
a name might have been worked out. I'm more inclined to
believe its a Freudian move, actually unknown to the
author.
I doubt that McCarthy chuckled about this thing. I get more
the feeling that he was writing a tribute to a child or even
to his own, no doubt now deceased, father ... They are the
kinds of things I read into books and stories ... But I can
be just as wrong as the next guy.
