You're apparently more romantic than I am, Kerry. I think that entire speech to Bridget is said, as Bogart says it, sarcatically. "I hope they don't hang you by that sweet little neck, precious." etc. He's not serious. He's toying with her as she's toyed with many before him... including Myles Archer. Spade is not, nor could he ever be in love with Bridget, or any of the women in this novel, with the possible exception of Effie!
