I've been wanting to read something by William Vollmann for a
while. I was afraid I wouldn't like his writing, so I chose
the shortest novel I could find. Read it on the flight back
from Jacksonville. In spite of the pornographic-sounding
title and the frequently sordid content, it works out to be a
sad and sentimental piece. The novel records the experiences
of Jimmy, an alcoholic Vietnam veteran living in a sleazy
hotel in a San Francisco neighborhood populated by drug
pushers and prostitutes. From stories he coaxes out of
various whores, Jimmy attempts to construct a fantasy life
for himself with a never-present woman named Gloria. Not a
bad novel.
