If you're mentioning French writers, the work of Zola also contains this type of sordid, proto-noir element.

I am happy that Hugo continues to have readers. At his best, the man swings. HIs best, for me is _Les travailleurs de la mer_. It is proto-Conradian and the prose really shines.
