James R.,

Re your comment below:

"McDaniel's novels were my favorites in that series, too. He was involved in science-fiction fandom under the name Ted Johnstone, but I've never been clear on whether that was his real name or whether David McDaniel was. He wrote one SF novel in addition to his U.N.C.L.E. books, but nothing else that I'm aware of."

McDaniel was apparently a real fan of the show, and clearly put his best efforts into his UNCLE novels.

It was McDaniel who came up with the actual full name of the THRUSH organization that was opposed by UNCLE in his first novel in the series, THE DAGGER AFFAIR. In that one, Solo and Kuryakin discover that THRUSH is an acronym for "Techonological Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity." McDaniel's novel also implies, with coming right out and saying, that the founder of THRUSH was Professor Moriarty.

There's an article about McDaniel's work on the series here:

There's also an entry on McDaniel at Wikipedia.
