Perhaps a little off-topic but not by far is a nonfiction
book by David Courtwright called Violent Land, subtitled
Single Men and Social Disorder from the Frontier to the Inner
City. It's a study of the causes of violence in the US. It's
got a really decent analysis of cowboys and the cowboy
image.
