Mickey Spillane's Tiger Mann books.
Mickey's early Mike Hammer books aren't high art but they
have an energy and are pretty good reads.
But with his James Bond Rip-off, Tiger Mann, Spillane is
venturing into unknown territory, the slick, suave secret
agent. Well, there's nothing slick, or suave about Spillane
and the books are just bad re-hashes of Mike Hammer stuck in
an Ian Fleming plot. Also Spillane's writing would never be
considered polished, but his horrible grammar and tortured
prose in these books goes beyond lazy and borders on
incompetence.
I also suggest John Lutz' Alo Nudger books. I only read one
book but Alo is such an ineffectual, incompetent weenie that
the books are frustrating. I mean, in the book I read, Alo is
too stupid to even get an up-front retainer and his client
swindles him out of the couple grand he owes him for solving
the case. Ugh! What a wimp. I threw the book across the room
at that point.
