I finished reading Richard Powell's books last night. I
thoroughly enjoyed it. The surprise wasn't much of a
surprise, but the plot moved along well, the characters were
fun and there was a fair amount of humor with the
suspense.
The cover of the Hard Case Crime reprint mentions that Powell
is also the author of A Shot in the Dark. This is the same
Shot in the Dark as the second Inspector Clouseau movie,
right? Has anyone read the book? I'm guessing the movie is
pretty different from the book? Sure, there's a lot of humor
in Say It With Bullets, but it is definitely not a parody or
spoof. There is certainly none of the slapstick or buffoonery
so well portrayed by Peter Sellers (in fact, how would one
write such visual material on the page?). Is the book even
set in Europe? Is there a scene in a nudist colony? Do the
movie and book have anything more in common than the "who was
in whose room when the shot was fired" set-up?
