Bill,
It was the Frontigan Convention -Festival International du
Roman Noir - from 6 to 11 june. A yearly event (2006 is the
ninth) which is amongst the two best of France about noir
lit. This event is known by some authors members of the R-A
list (like Vicki Hendricks and others). I couldn't be there
for the full program, but was there during Saturday
(the most interesting day this year)
. Guest of honor: Elmore "Dutch" Leonard (needs no
introduction here, I think). Interesting public interview of
this veteran of noir, with some good takes on his experiences
with Hollywood, film makers, stars and book options... When I
questioned him about his famous "ten rules" for writing a
good novel, he confirmed that he still stick on them:
"...results of a long experience". Also some good explanation
about his writing style evolution and the chase for
minimalism therein.
Among the other guests (not exhaustive): the Americans: Ace
Atkins, Larry Beinhart the Brits: Peter May (for the recent
translation of his "Chinese" series of thrillers), Mark
Billingham (best-seller kind of thrillers), Maureen O'Brian
the French: prominent were J-B Pouy (godfather of the small
publishers and talented noir novellist), Fran篩s Gu鲩f
(essayist, specialist of American noir lit and cinema... but
better know these days for his leading of the Rivages
publishing house, devoted to noir and H-B), Claude Mespl褥
(polar archivist and a specialist for dictionaries concerning
mystery lit).
There was also an event for "comics" makers with signing
sessions. Comics (BD, in French) is a very very popular
medium in France and Belgium, and more important gatherings
happen in other cities, all along the year.
The warm temperature allowed a "long good-bye dinner" with a
gigantic mussel barbecue (French style) and buffet close to
the beach. And the local white wine (of very good origin) was
flowing the whole night long. A very good organization, a
friendly atmosphere (due to the excellent work by the
organizer and founder: Michel Gueorguieff and the full
collaboration of the city council).
