For those who enjoy reading everything JDM wrote using McGee
(and Meyer) as characters, I would recommend the lesser known
_Reading for Survival_. MacDonald summarizes in his 1985
introduction, "The theme will be the terrible isolation of
the nonreader, his life without meaning or substance because
he cannot comprehend the world in which he lives...."
Essentially, it is 30-plus pages of Meyer describing to McGee
(and being prodded by McGee's questions) the possible results
of having a nonreading population.
I do not agree with everything Meyer (MacDonald) says, but it
is food for thought.
