wrote to Mary Hammett on December 26, 1944 from Fort
Richardson, Alaska. He writes, "...By the way there's an
article about detective stories

[footnote states this is "The Simple Art of Murder"]. It's by
Raymond Chandler and -- though this may sound immodest of me
