Yes, Hammett writes that he liked Chandler's essay "The
Simple Art of Murder" and is clearly flattered by Chandler's
comments regarding Hammett. I believe that this is the only
mention of Chandler in DASHIELL HAMMETT: SELECTED
LETTERS.
I always thought that it was rather clear that Roger Wade was
a scathing self-portrait. This is evident in chapter 28,
where Wade writes: "The moon's four days off the full and
there's a square patch of moonlight on the wall and it's
looking at me like a big blind milky eye, a wall eye. Joke.
Goddam silly simile. Writers. Everything has to be like
something else. My head is as fluffy as whipped cream but not
as sweet. More similes. I could vomit just thinking about the
lousy racket." If that's not Chandler mocking
