I guess I have to express my surprise and sorrow at the fact that *generally* speaking (...and that is always dangerous...) Vachss's criticism both in the US press and on various US discussion groups (including and especially Rara) has been quite negative (or at best lukewarm) after the initial enthousiasm (quite a few years ago). I wonder why his strong and original voice has been in such bad light...

********** I enjoyed the first few and then I found them sinking steadily into an overwrought and overbearing quagmire of leftist propaganda. The last couple I read (FALSE ALLEGATIONS and another one maybe entitled SAFE HOUSE) were terrible. I thought they were comic-bookish from the beginning, but that really didn't bother me. The earlier books had a tongue-in-cheek to them that dissolved into a pompous self-importance in the later ones.

In spite of the bad experience with the later ones, I did buy a newer one. I think it's titled DEAD AND GONE, and I'm hoping I will enjoy it when I get around to it.
