I've been on and off this list for a couple of years now...and I'm back again.

Anyway, I haven't heard anyone mention in this thread William Vollmann's The Royal Family. Encyclopedic, eandering, and damn brilliant most of the time...very noir in most parts of it, and it deals with one of my favorite subjects, which is whoring.
