<<<Thanks for shaking my memory. To get sort of back on topic -- who had harder-boiled lyrics: Pink Floyd or Deep Purple?>>>

Deep Purple = Hardboiled (Especially the Steve Morse penned "Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming") Pink Floyd = Noir

How can you get more noir than Syd Barrett... Well, Syd's not really screwed. He makes more money off of five albums (one of which he wasn't even on, just dropped by the studio to incoherently say hello) and is now the most overpaid gardener in Cambridge, England. So I guess he wasn't really screwed, just dazed and confused for about 20 years. Waters, otoh, does nothing but sing about getting screwed.

Ian Gillan and David Coverdale's lyrics are all about sex, booze, and drugs. Very hardboiled.

Tommy Bolin, what a loss.
