In short, succint and objective (Hammett) versus florid and subjective (Chandler). These are relative terms and Chandler's short stories are more Hammettian than Chandlerian; I am thinking of the novels. Ross Thomas's style was cold and clear as ice, close to Hammett's in my opinion, though Thomas was not anybody's imitator.
