I have nothing against lots of shooting in pulp stories and novels. It's only when I can't understand what's going on that I rebel... Forexample, I tried to reread Paul Cain's Fast One and found it indigestible. I have never had that happen with Hammett or Whitfield, for example, or Daly, for that matter. There is a difference between bad and incomprehensible.

By the way, I am now giving Chandler the treatment, and none of his stories reads badly. I guess Blackmailers was a beginner's exercise patterned after people Chandler considered good (with reason).
