RARA-AVIS: Hardboiled panic...

From: Jacques Debierue ( matrxtech@yahoo.com)

The other night I was woken up by a storm and couldn't go back to sleep, so I picked up the Library of America Chandler collection. I said what the hell, let's be historical, and started reading Blackmailers Don't Shoot.

Five, six pages into the story and I couldn't make head or tail of it. Lots of people getting shot, Mallory driving here and there, but it made no sense. I finished it, but it was painful. A situation: either to doubt Chandler's ability to deliver the magic or doubt my own hemispheres at two in the morning.

The code of the card-carrying hardboil prohibits the former, so... I went on to read Trouble is My Business. Ah, Chandler. Just for good measure I read The King in Yellow. Ah, Chandler. But the panic was real. It made me think of the faith we feed into this.

Best,

MrT
