RARA-AVIS: Various and Sundry Things

Fellow Rara-Avians,

This month I've mostly lurked (juggling three jobs and trying to finish another draft of the novel for an editor who insisted that it whould be another 5000-10,000 words longs), but I didn't want the month to end without adding my thanks to Ms. Hendricks for her engeretic and thought-provoking posts. You were an excellent guest.

Also, congratulations to Jack on his Shamus nomination. I'll be pulling for you in Chi-Town, buddy!

Congrats also to Charles for one of Hard Case's books, Dominic Stansberry's THE CONFESSION, winning the Edgar, and commiserations on his own book, LITTLE GIRL LOST, losing. Is there, however, a Shamus nomination in Charles's future? Has anyone seen the complete list of nominations?

I'm a big John Creasey fan, at least when he's in his his "J.J. Marric" incarnation. One of the odd things about Creasey is that, though the quality of his books could vary widely, it stayed consistent within a particular pseudonym (and he had enough pseudonyms to be his own chapter of both the MWA and the CWA [which he founded, by the way; the CWA "First Novel" award is called the "John Creasey Dagger"]). Hence, while, say, "Anthony Morton" or "Gordon Ashe" were just run-of-the-mill "Saint/Bulldog Drummond" stuff, he was always good to very good as "John Creasey" and excellent as "Marric."

I'll have more to say on Woolrich's NIGHT & FEAR later.

JIM DOHERTY
