Are there any Newton Thornburg fans here? I discovered
Thornburg's work a few weeks back when I picked up a second
hand copy of CUTTER AND BONE in 'Murder One' (a terrific
London bookstore). I never thought I would find another 'hard
boiled' American writer whose work I liked as much Charles
Willeford's, but CUTTER AND BONE seems to me the perfect
crime novel. Yet Thornburg doesn't appear to have that much
of a reputation. I searched the internet, and found one
extremely useful interview at:
http://www.twbooks.co.uk/crimescene/thornburginterview.htm
But I couldn't find much else. That interview was conducted
several years ago, so I'm not even certain that Thornburg is
still alive.
I have now read Thornburg's first 5 novels (GENTLEMAN BORN,
KNOCKOVER, TO DIE IN CALIFORNIA, CUTTER AND BONE and BLACK
ANGUS), the last three of which are masterpieces, and am
about to start VALHALLA.
According to the 'about the author' blurb on the back cover
of the Australian paperback edition of KNOCKOVER, Thornburg
had at one point been a TV writer. Anyone know anything about
that?
