For what it's worth, I preferred GINMILL in its earlier
incarnation as a short story, "By the Dawn's Early Light." It
won both the Edgar and the Shamus for Best Short Story and
Block, perhaps inspired by its success, did a Chandler and
expanded it into a novel.
