It's a bit ironic you'd say that, since up to the time of _LA Requiem_, the Elvis Cole series had a lot of playful humor in it. But it seems that all the humor has been taken out ever since. _The Last Detective_ and _The Forgotten Man_ are both very well-written and fast-moving, but largely devoid of humor. And Cole's partner is Joe Pike.
