Hi Jane:
In addition to Max Allan Collins (The Dark City, 1987;
Butcher´s Dozen, 1988; Bullet Proof, 1989, Murder by the
Numbers, 1993; all four with Elliot Ness) and Howard Browne
(Pork City, 1988), I highly recommend W.R. Burnett´s "Little
Caesar (1929)" (about the rise and fall of Cesare "Rico"
Bandello in a Chicago Mafia gang) and Ed Mazzaro. Mazzaro
wrote of an undercover federal agent who infiltrates Al
Capone's mob in One Death in the Red (1976), Bootleg Angel
(1977), and Chicago Deadline (1978). The first Mazzaro book
is excellent, the quality of the other two books declines,
however, they are a good read.
