One person to read is Max Allan Collins. I haven't read his
Eliot Ness books, but he did four about him, and then there's
the Nate Heller series, where Chicago gangsters turn up a
lot. Capone, for example, plays an important part in STOLEN
AWAY, even though it's about the Lindbergh kidnapping in
another part of the country. I'm sure Mr. Doherty and others
can give many more recommendations.
You might also look for CHICAGO CONFIDENTIAL (1950) by Jack
Lait and Lee Mortimer, a paperback with the inside scoop on
Chi bars, restaurants, gambling, whorehouses, etc. It's a bit
later, but I bet Prohibition gangsters are mentioned a fair
bit. The Lait/Mortimer books are very entertaining.
