Max Phillips, FADE TO BLONDE (2004). One of the new Hard Case
series--had to special order it. "She was a little taste of
heaven and a one-way ticket to hell!"
Gary Phillips, MONKOLOGY: THE IVAN MONK STORIES (2004).
Beautiful edition from Dennis McMillan, with a CD enclosed.
I've never read any of the Ivan Monk stuff. This is a
collection of fourteen short stories, from 1995-2004.
Ken Bruen, THE KILLING OF THE TINKERS (2002). Bruen's stuff
is still hard to find in Canada.
Hugh Merrill, THE RED HOT TYPEWRITER: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF
JOHN D. MACDONALD (2000). This looks fairly workaday, but
after just a brief glance I learned some interesting stuff
about JDM (e.g., he tried writing comedy and submitted a
routine to Bob Newhart, who ignored it). Unfortunately it
looks like it's short on criticism of JDM's books, but I'll
certainly take a straight biography. I'd like to learn more
about him.
Roy Hoopes, OUR MAN IN WASHINGTON (2000). A few weeks ago I
mentioned that James M. Cain and H.L. Mencken appeared in a
short story by Connie Willis. Here, they are detectives in a
novel written by Cain's biographer! It's 1923, and they go to
Washington to investigate a scandal in the Harding
administration. I have Hoopes's massive bio CAIN, but have
never read it. First line: "They threw me off the streetcar
about noon."
John Williams, FIVE PUBS, TWO BARS AND A NIGHTCLUB (1999),
and CARDIFF DEAD (2000). I recently read an online interview
with Mr. Williams where he said his early books could
probably be found in American remainder houses, and sure
enough, I did. Heh.
Kent Harrington, DARK RIDE (1996). Not a purchase, since Mr.
Morgan gave it to me, but it's a recent acquisition.
Edward Bunker, THE ANIMAL FACTORY (1977). I've never read any
Bunker, but he's highly recommended by people on the
list.
